Easy as Pie

December 10th, 2007

Once again we’ve been stunned by our volunteer community. I sent out an email last Friday asking if anyone was interested in bringing pies to our upcoming tenant holiday party. Staff here were hoping to give each tenant a pie to take home for their own holiday celebrations. (Really, what says “home” more than a pie?)

Now, despite coming from a long-line of pie makers I have no such talent, so I was extra impressed at the number of people who offered to BAKE pies for the occasion. We’re looking for about fifty pies total and so far we have 20 committed. A first grade class at the Ann Arbor Open School (just wait for these photos!), the YMCA Youth Volunteer Corps, and an ever-growing number of individual pie producers are coming forward.

As always, our volunteers inspire us. Just when we’re feeling all ho-hum about the next task here they come all enthusiastic - emails full of exclamation marks asking what’s the maximum they can offer; phone calls in excited voices saying they can’t wait to be at whatever event it is; smiling faces before during and after a project - and there they go leaving Avalon with a job well done and their enthusiasm dusting us all.

How can we build community at Avalon? Sometimes it’s easy as pie.
