Supportive Housing is Key to Ending Homelessness.

Avalon Housing is a community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to developing and managing permanent supportive rental housing for people with extremely low incomes in Washtenaw County. We own and / or operate 324 units, scattered at twenty three sites throughout Ann Arbor. Most of our rents are structured to be affordable to people with incomes at or below 30% of the area median income.. The majority of our households include people who were homeless or who have a mental or physical disability. Voluntary support services are available to all tenants to help them maintain their housing and enhance their quality of life.

It's a beer and cheese throwdown for Avalon!

Join us at the Jolly Pumpkin on Tuesday, August 10th (5pm - 8pm), as some of our favorite local restaurants face off in a culinary challenge to support Avalon!

Presented with the support of the Wisconsin Milk Board, 9 talented chefs will be creating dishes using Wisconsin cheese and pairing them with locally produced beers (from Jolly Pumpkin, Grizzly Peak and North Peak). A panel of judges - with your help - will pick the winner!

There is a $15 suggested donation to attend, join in the fun and taste the entries. Participating chefs include Thad Gillies (Logan), Silvio Medoro (Silvio's Organic Pizza), Jim Leonardo (Vinology) and Magie Long (Jolly Pumpkin). Dennis Deschaine, Avalon board member and local foodie, will be heading up the judging team. Throwdown flyer"

Calling all cooks, gardeners, writers and friends!

We're working on a very exciting project - and need your help!

We are creating a very special book to celebrate our Edible Avalon organic gardening program, and need your submissions.

Maybe you have a story about what it's like to eat a warm tomato fresh off the vine, or a special memory of helping out in your grandmother's kitchen. Perhaps you have some great tips about growing the perfect squash or a great recipe for pickles.

Whatever it is, we want to read all about it!

With your help, we'll be able to produce a cookbook and essay collection that celebrates the very best of Avalon, our community and the power of food to connect us all! You do not need to be a master gardener or expert chef to take part.

Pieces should be 500 - 1,000 words in length, and we are looking to receive submissions by August 13th. We'll be notifying everyone who'll be included by the end of August.

Please contact Jude for more information or to submit an entry!
