Supportive Housing is Key to Ending Homelessness.

Avalon Housing is a community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to developing and managing permanent supportive rental housing for people with extremely low incomes in Washtenaw County. We own and operate 180 units, scattered at fifteen sites throughout Ann Arbor. Our rents are structured to be affordable to people with incomes at or below 30% of the area median income. The majority of our households include people who were homeless or who have a mental or physical disability. Voluntary support services are available to all tenants to help them maintain their housing and enhance their quality of life.

Avalon Housing's Whirlwind Edu-Thon!

Avalon Housing would like to thank the sponsors and individuals who made our November whirlwind edu-thon such a success!

“With a little help from our friends…” we raised over $88,000 which will allow us to continue providing our tenants with supportive services in the coming year. We are touched to have received such incredible support from the community during these difficult economic times. We would like to wish you a very happy Thanksgiving and extend to you our most profound gratitude for the inspiration you have renewed in all of us here at Avalon. It means so much to us to know that so many believe in our cause.

Built in 1869 as a farmhouse with land that stretched all the way south to Liberty, it now includes five efficiencies, one one-bedroom and a two bedroom apartment. In 1935 the first gathering of the Ann Arbor Friends Meeting (Quaker) was hosted in the living room.

Exciting Resources About Supportive Housing

Opening Doors: A Housing Publication for the Disability Community covers the topic of Permanent Supportive Housing in Issue 20, January, 2003 of their newsletter. Including a brief history of the development of permanent supportive housing along with definitions of commonly used phrases, this issue is a good primer for those new to the topic and a good review for those in the field.
