Avalon’s Model of Supportive Housing
Supportive housing is the combination of non-profit affordable housing operation and the availability of flexible, individualized support services for tenants with special needs. Across the country, supportive housing is proving to be the single most effective solution to homelessness for individuals and families who, in addition to being homeless, are working to manage mental and physical disabilities, including recovery from drug or alcohol addiction.
In Avalon’s supportive housing model, Avalon acts as developer, owner and manager of the housing units, and contracts with another nonprofit organization, Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County, to provide support services for Avalon tenants. Avalon and Catholic Social Services work together in a true partnership where the success of each agency is tied to the effective work of the other. Both organizations share a common mission of reducing homelessness, building community, and helping the community’s most vulnerable and disenfranchised residents to achieve self-determination.
